In Ayurveda, it is assumed that three vital energies (Vata, Pitta and Kapha, called doshas) determine the constitution of every human being. From birth, the energies are in a particular balance in every organism. This original state is called Prakruthi. In most cases, one or two doshas dominate.
The individually determined harmony of the doshas can become imbalanced by mental stress, poor lifestyle and other external circumstances. Man becomes sick. Ayurveda helps to prevent the imbalance of vital energies and seeks the attainment of the Prakruthi sate.
Vata is responsible for all movements in the body and the growth, controls the nervous system, circulation, respiration, the locomotor system and excretion. Vata types are petite, have a dry skin and easily shiver. They are creative and talkative. Vata people are prone to digestive problems, sleep disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Important are a regulated daily routine with 3 hot meals, plenty of rest and relaxation. Regular oil massage and plenty of hot drinks will exude favorable effects.
Pitta controls digestion, metabolism and regulates the heat budget. It controls vision and intellect and determines our appearance. People with Pitta dominance have a moderately strong physique and warm skin. They are adventuresome and rhetorically gifted, but tend to perfection, are impatient and hot. This type is usually hungry and thirsty. It is prone to skin diseases, infections and hyperacidity. Cool, bitter, and astringent foods are preferred over oily, spicy and acidifying. The balance between activity and relaxation is an essential focus for Pitta people.
Kapha is the framework, is the energy donor and provides stamina. It regulates fluid balance and is responsible for the natural defense system. Kapha makes us strong, vital and gives inner peace. The Kapha type has a cautious nature and a good memory. He is prone to obesity, has cold and moist skin and usually strong, curled hair. The metabolism is slow as is digestion. Light, astringent, bitter foods are preferable. Kapha people should live an active lifestyle with plenty of exercise and avoid too much sleep.
