Eight historic houses for a luxurious jewel on the Elbe

The historical roots of the hotel location can be traced back to the year 1617. Browsing through old documents of the Museum of Local History Bad Schandau, the convoluted history of the buildings becomes visible and one notices that from the beginning, in addition to the variety of shops, breweries and malthouses, inns and hotels had found their place. Already around the turn of the 20th century, the magnificent hotel buildings situated directly on the banks of the River Elbe were the travel destination of guests from all over the world.

Following Second World War all buildings had a similar fate. The original owners were expropriated and the buildings were used primarily as FDGB vacation homes. Only after the 2002 flood, the new hotel project “Bad Schandau Elbresidenz” was initiated at this traditional location between the River Elbe and the market place. Of the original 11 historical buildings on the market side only two houses were demolished and replaced by modern new buildings. Another historic building collapsed partially during the construction and was restored to its original condition. Since the hotel opened in August 2007, the cityscape of Bad Schandau is dominated by the new ensemble of the “Elbresidenz”.
