Marketplace 3
Marketplace 3 that was mentioned already in 1617 as brewery of the Urban Peechen heirs attests to a similar past. Around the year 1800, two small cottages stood at this site, with their gable pointing to the River Elbe. The merchant Gotthelf Böhme merged them to one building. In 1886, architect Max Dorn built on behalf of the widow Böhme the new building of Gotthelf Böhme Company who used it until 1925 as a building material business. Then the new owner Richard Ullrich dealt in timber and fertilizer. From 1925 to 1938, the Czech Customs Office resided in this building.
In the last 150 years, the market building was home to a variety of trades. It began 1863 with fancies and writing materials, a lending library, and the trimmings and cleaning store FW Tannenberg. Around 1900, a bookstore with book printing and bookbinding, in 1930, leather store and, in 1938, a floral store moved in. In 1950, the then resident bookstore of the KPD was taken over by the cross-border organization “Book and Art Dresden”. Until the turnaround, this building was also used as a travel agency of the GDR. Today, the main entrance of the new hotel with the hotel lobby and reception are located on the market side.
