Marketplace 5 and 7
Even building “Marketplace 7” that eventually became “Hotel Deutsches Haus”, began in 1617 as a brewery and has been remodeled into an inn in 1831 with the tacit acquiescence of the Council and in 1856 into a hotel with a small dance hall. The market-facing building “Marketplace 5” housed in the course of time doctor’s or dentist's offices, a grocery shop, a pastry shop and cafe and a wine shop with wine cellar. Today, the hotel bar is located in the ground floor.
“Marketplace No. 7b” was the former “Hotel Forsthaus” that also began as a brewery in 1617, which, since 1837, was used as a bar with accommodations. The Elbfront of the building was built in 1848 by Emanuel Strobel. It hardly has changed since. After World War 2, the building was operated as a vacation home by the FDGB under the name “Louis Fürnberg”. Today, the breakfast room of the new hotel – the Restaurant Residenz – is on the ground floor of buildings “Marketplace 7 and 7b”.
